I will try every hobby in existence, so you don’t have to.
I am fascinated with hobbies. Their histories, their therapeutic qualities, and my own limitations of them. I am enchanted by the way a shy person suddenly won’t shut up when the chance to discuss their hobby arises.
Every hobby is a quest, and if you’re reading this site, you might be in the questing mood. But starting the wrong hobby might leave you with only a Pinterest Fail and a lifetime of regret. I don’t want this to happen to you.
I started this “hobby hobby blog” to explore the many hobbies of the world, and help guide readers from ennui to enthusiasm in no time flat.
The Rules of the Quest
My goal is to try each hobby on my list at least three times, in various levels of difficulty. If the hobby is based offsite or by event, rather than project, I will partake of said event three times.
Hobbies will be graded with no particular consistency in the following categories
- Start-Up Cost
- Cost per Project/Event
- Focus Needed
- Time Needed
- Giftability
- Space required
You can learn more about these categories and considerations for your own hobby on my first blog post here.
There are a lot of things I am simply not interested in trying, or limitations prevent me from doing so. For some of these, I may bring in guest writers. For others, you’ll just have to Google elsewhere.
Not Happening
- Hobbies that must be done offsite or need large investments in the home, like blacksmithing or glassblowing, will be given the lowest priority.
- Intellectual pursuits. Sorry, I won’t be getting in to film history, poetry writing, or mapping the night sky.
- Things that require a professional instructor, like dancing or scuba diving. Also I hate dancing.
- “Collecting” hobbies, such as antiquing, geology, and stamps. I’m sure I’ll “collect” enough crap trying 100+ hobbies.
- Hobbies that would require some sort of long-term responsibility on my part. I will not get an aquarium, race sled dogs, engage in falconry or tend African Violets (yes, it’s a thing). I do already have cats, so if there’s a hobby I can do that involves them, I’ll try it.
- No hunting. I have nothing against hunters (I love some good venison), but I’m a sensitive soul and a hobby that makes you cry is probably not a good fit. Perhaps I’ll go on a recon mission.
- I feel that there is a big difference between a hobby and a ‘recreation’ (which I’ll blog about one day). I do not plan to do any recreational activities such as reading, traveling, video games, sports, or hiking…yet. We’ll see where this blog takes me.
- Hobbies with so many offshoots so as to be impossible. This includes “cooking” and “gardening.” When possible, I will break these up into smaller hobbies.
- Steampunk.
